About Development Diplomacy

Actors from civil society, governments, multilateral institutions, and the private sector, among others, might apply Development Diplomacy in dialogue, consensus-building, advocacy, negotiation, and mediation in policy and decision-making processes for collective actions for inclusive and equitable Sustainable development in multilateral and multi-stakeholder governance spaces and at the interfaces of multilevel governance.

Development Diplomacy represents a contemporary diplomatic practice that targets sustainable development and sustaining peace. Development Diplomacy applied in actors’ relations and cooperation favours a comprehensive, inclusive, human rights-based, and environmentally sustainable approach for Sustainable development.

It applies to building inclusive and equitable multi-stakeholder partnerships and initiatives at all levels, grounded in communication, negotiation and mediation, human rights principles, governance standards and rules for transparency, accountability, and obligations, and ensuring the participation and empowerment of those who are beneficiaries or impacted for shared well-being, socially just and environmentally sustainable outcomes, preventing conflicts, and for sustaining peace. Herewith, we touch base with Development Diplomacy practice and approach.

Development Diplomacy fosters dialogue and cooperation among and between distinct actors across and amongst societies based on equal terms, non-discrimination, and creating conjointly understanding and trust among them, thus favouring societal behavioural changes for just and inclusive societies and sustaining a living planet.

About Ambassador(ret.) Therese Adam

Following my career as a diplomat at the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), I served for 28 years in different functions of diplomatic affairs and international development cooperation, and since 2017, I have engaged with Development Diplomacy specifically in the context of the Global governance Agendas aiming for sustainable development in different fields of work. My entry point began mainly in lecturing at HEIs on Global governance and diplomacy, deepening on specific issues related to the implementation of the global Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, as well as the interlinkages of inclusive sustainable development, post-conflict risks and sustaining peace, referring to its global Goal 16 (“promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice for all and inclusive institutions at all levels”).
